Writer & Media Expert
I have now featured in a whole host of National media including many newspapers (The Independent, The Sun, Daily Mail, Sunday Mail) giving expert advice on various nutrition and exercise related topics. These are generally expert comment pieces where I do not actually write the piece therefore I try my hardest to ensure what I say actually gets written! Radio and TV is a lot better as you can not be mis-quoted but ‘clever’ editing can still completely change the feeling of what is being said. Unfortunately, anything remotely ‘clever’ is often taken out as apparently the public are stupid… yeah right! The moral of the story is, if you want good quality information written by me? Use my blog and articles or if you want questions answered, use my Twitter and Facebook! Anyway, here is a selection of what I’ve done:
I was recently asked to speak on BBC Radio Leicester about a new study that came out showing that exercise was able to reduce the risk of cancer and cancer re-occurance. I got about 30seconds to talk nutrition which I believe plays as much if not a bigger role! It strangely seems people are still skeptical about the role of diet and exercise in keeping them healthy.
On Monday 31st October I appeared on SKY Active Channels feature on Clare Nasir called ‘Clare Nasir’s Body Transformation.’ It detailed some of Clare’s training along with snippets of a 45minute interview with me where I talked about everything from the hormonal changes during pregnancy as well as the differences between men and women to specific foods to avoid that increase hunger and tip the equation in favour of fat gain!
In 2009, I featured in ‘When Diets Go Wrong’ on BBC3. I was asked to speak on the reasons behind fat gain and its relationship to food choices and exercise. An entire afternoons filming unfortunately got condensed into about 90 seconds but it was good none the less… (apart from one dodgy camera angle that makes me look like a pig! No joke, if there is ever a re-run you’ll see what I mean!)
I have written a couple of features for the Sun now. Generally around New Year with the weight loss frenzy kicking in. The first thing I ever did was a piece reviewing exercise DVDs would you believe! Little did I know I’d be helping celebs with them only a year or two later! I did a Fat Loss Myths feature in December 2009 as well as a fat loss piece for the Sun Buzz magazine! I also contributed to this odd piece on sandwiches!
I’ve been writing for Men’s Running ever since it started back in Oct/Nov 2010!
Every month I’ve been filling 3 pages with recipes, hot topics, research spotlights and answers to reader’s questions. Slowly but surely I’m starting to hear that the consistent nutrition message is getting through! I even got an email from someone telling me they were reading my scribblings in a cafe in San Fransisco after buying it at the airport before they left the UK. Awesome!
After providing a few expert comments, following my work with different celebrity weight loss stories, I have started doing regular pieces for Reveal magazine.
Always interesting to write a bit of ‘pop nutrition’; it’s hard not to get too technical and write something that makes for informative yet easy reading!
I have been writing articles for MyProtein.com since 2003/2004. I wrote some of their very first nutrition/training articles that were featured on the homepage. Since then I have been writing articles for their newsletter with the two most recent being Competition Preparation for Bodybuilders, and Nitrogen Balance. Expect to see a few more now that I am their official expert!
I have featured in Men’s Health numerous times, never yet with my own complete article but often with expert comment. These comments range from outdoor exercise options to key components of a fat loss program… what else?
One of my most interesting media experiences was being asked to assess Madonna’s physique. The Daily Mail wanted to know the name of every muscle and vein that could be seen as well as nutritional and exercise explanations for why she would look this way!
